1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons freshly chopped parsley
Lasagna:
16 ounces lasagna noodles
16 ounces sliced mozzarella cheese
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions:
Preheat the Oven:
Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Cook the Meat:
In a large pot over medium heat, add the ground beef and ground Italian sausage.
Break up the meat with a spoon and cook until browned.
Add the minced onion and crushed garlic, and cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
Prepare the Sauce:
Add the fennel seed, ground oregano, salt, pepper, sugar, basil, and parsley to the meat mixture. Stir well.
Pour in the chicken broth, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Stir until well combined.
Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for at least an hour (up to 4 hours for best flavor).
Soak the Noodles:
Place the lasagna noodles in a 9x13 pan.
Pour hot tap water over the noodles until they are fully submerged. Let them soak for 30 minutes.
Prepare the Ricotta Mixture:
In a bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, salt, ground nutmeg, and freshly chopped parsley. Mix well.
Refrigerate the ricotta mixture until ready to use.
Assemble the Lasagna:

Layer 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce, slightly overlapping.
Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture over the noodles.
Layer slices of mozzarella cheese over the ricotta mixture.
Cover with about 1 to 1.5 cups of meat sauce, then sprinkle with 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese.
Repeat the layers two more times (noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, meat sauce, Parmesan).
Finish with a final layer of noodles, sauce, and Parmesan cheese.
Bake:
Cover the lasagna with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is browned and bubbly.
